Hidden Beauty

When I go to Church on a Sunday morning, I always stop in the singing and look around, and every Sunday I laugh to myself, if I didn’t laugh I think I would cry at the beauty of the reality of Church.

Although the building I stand in every Sunday is beautiful, and a blessing, Church is not a building. Church is not hierarchy and rules and traditions.

Church is people coming together, people who love Jesus coming together, to worship, to love and to learn about the one who made them.  Why is Church beautiful? Church is beautiful because of the diversity, I cannot think of any other place where I could find the amazing, incredible mix of people in one place.  We are all on our own journeys travelling along, but every week for a couple of hours we meet together.   Our journeys collide and we stand together to praise, worship and learn about God. Church is the people.

People are beautiful. There are things that get in the way, things that the world gives to us and says, THIS is what you need, you can’t live without THIS, if you don’t have THIS your life will not be worth it.  The world tells us lies, and taints us, but as people we are created in God’s image, we are knit together before the beginning of time, we are loved and cherished by God.  There is a lie that says ‘You are ugly’ this lie is created by the world, but in fact we are beautiful.

Things go wrong, things happen that God had not planned, people end up in the wrong places, but underneath it all, once stripped of all the dirt, everybody is beautiful.

Perhaps you would look at a homeless person, and say where is the beauty in that? I absolutely agree, there is not any beauty in being homeless. Everybody deserves, and should have, somewhere to live, but that doesn’t mean they’ve lost their beauty, it has just been covered over.  As Christians I believe we need to go out into this world, and start uncovering the hidden beauty, as Church, united together we need to find the hidden beauty.  God can see pain and suffering, and it hurts Him, it hurts Him, because He doesn’t want to see something beautiful, someone beautiful who He created go to waste, because their beauty has been hidden by the world.  God wants everyone to ‘live life to the max’ (John 10:10) being who they were created to be.  God can see the pain and the suffering but He also sees through it, to the beauty beneath.

The Church is people coming together, when people come together under the wrong authority devastating things can happen, but under God the Church could unite and change this world.  We can step closer towards God’s kingdom come.  Recently I heard someone tell me the problem with democracy, they said that in countries democracy may work but in the Church there is only one authority to obey.  When God says go, we should not hesitate.  Why do we spend weeks, months and even years putting decisions through committee meetings, and members meetings, if God says ‘Go’ we should go, no matter what the circumstances are.

There is hidden beauty in everyone, because God created us, He created us in His image and He is beyond beauty.  Let’s unite under God, as Church, and uncover the hidden beauty in the world.

You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. 1 Peter 3:4
